Terms of the Trade: What Is a Nut? Terms of the Trade: What Is a Nut?
We’re not talking about pistachios or cashews, here. A nut in the DIY sense is a small piece of hardware with a threaded hole in the middle, used in conjunction with a bolt to hold a stack of parts together. The most common shape of a nut is hexagonal, although they can also be square. Most nuts can be tightened and loosened with tools such as wrenches. However, some, such as the wing nut, are designed for easy tightening and loosening by hand. You’ve heard of the phrase “the nuts and bolts;” think of nuts as the glue that holds everything together in the construction of furniture, houses and machinery.
