If you are looking to install lap siding for your next project, you will want to make sure that you are thoroughly prepared for the project. Here are a few materials that you will need a long with steps to help guide you through the process with ease.

Step 1 - Prime First

One big mistake that people make is waiting until after installing the lap siding to prime and paint it. Instead, fill up the paint sprayer with the paint primer and spray each length before installation. Do the back of the siding and then when dry, flip each slat over and do the front. Then, if you choose to paint the siding, you can do the same with the paint. Start on one side and then once it is dry, turn over and do the other.

Step 2 - Use the Level to Mark

Another mistake that can be made often is not marking or using a level to mark around the house one siding width above the ground. Using the level can make all of the difference in the world and instead of relying on your shaky hand or memory to mark the points, you can use one snap of the chalk line.

Step 3 - Begin the Corner

Now, begin in the corner with one of the 1 by 2 pieces. You want it to be flush in the corner and once you have it lined up with your chalk line, you can nail it in with a galvanized nail. Then, continue to do this with each one of the corners. Then, on the other side of the corner you want to do the same thing with the 1 x 3 piece but line it up with the outside edge of the other. Once it is set, nail it in and repeat for each corner.

Step 4 - Measure and Fit Siding

Measure the siding so that it will fit between the two corner pieces. Use the saw to cut the pieces out. Be sure to leave a little room on each end so that if the siding expands, it will still fit.

Step 5 - Install and Caulk

Now, take the first piece of siding and hold it up against the house. Hammer in a few nails throughout the length of the piece. Then, install the next piece the same way. Continue to install the pieces of siding all of the way down. While you are doing this, you will need to add a line of caulk in between each piece. Just begin on one end and caulk until the other. Keep rotating between caulk and pieces of siding until you have finished the rest of the wall.

These steps should help you to install the lap siding on your home with ease.
