The Pros and Cons to a CNC Lathe
A CNC lathe, or computer control numeric lathe, is a router that is controlled by use of a personal computer. CNC lathes can be use to cut wood, metal and plastic. There are advantages as well as disadvantages of using a control numeric lathe over a manual lathe.
There are many advantages to using a CNC router. A computer controlled router can provide more accuracy than a manual router and is better to use in cases where several exact copies of a piece need to be made. Also because all cuts are plugged into the computer before beginning the project the can be less wasteful cuts made, and save time and material. Another advantage to using a CNC lathe is that since there is little to no manual manipulation it does not require a great deal of mechanical skill.
There are also a few disadvantages to using a CNC router. Computer control numeric lathes and the working bit used for them can be more expensive than traditional routers. Also the computer training required to operate the CNC router software can be intense depending on the type of router purchased and its intended uses.
There are several things to consider when deciding whether to use a traditional router over a CNC router. Depending on the application it may be more cost effective to use one over the other. Either can be used successfully to complete most carpentry task.
