Things to Consider Before Painting Tile Floors Things to Consider Before Painting Tile Floors

Painting tile floors is a good way to renew them. Before you begin to paint, however, there are things you should consider to ensure you do a good job.

Cleaning

Clean the tiles very thoroughly before you begin painting tile floors. Not only will this ensure that the paint adheres to the tiles properly, but it will also eliminate any mildew which could cause later problems.

Repair

Take the time to repair or replace any tiles that are cracked and check the grout to be sure it’s in good condition. If not, replace it before you begin painting.

Sanding

You will need to send the tiles with 220-grit sandpaper if they have a gloss finish. This will rough them enough to accept the paint well. Clean the floor when you’ve finished or you’ll have dust in your paint.

Grout Lines

If you’re not planning on painting the group, fix masking tape firmly over it. This will make the painting go much faster.

Primer

You should only use a shellac-based primer or an oil-based primer when painting tiles floors. Use 2 coats, letting the first dry completely before applying the second. Once that’s dry, sand lightly to remove and small bumps, then wipe clean with a damp cloth to remove dust before painting.
