Tap and Wipe

A tap and wipe technique will allow you to loosen any surface debris and remove it. You can tap the catalytic converter with your hands or even a small tool. Wiping it with a large cloth will remove some surface debris, dirt and grease.

Mix an improvised solution of degreaser and hot water in a bucket. Use a cloth or a sponge to soak the catalytic converter in this mixture. Allow it to soak in for a few hours before spraying the catalytic converter clean. This will allow the degreaser to penetrate much of the dirt, which will be sticking to the surface of the converter.

Power Spray

A power spray is the best way to clean a huge amount of grease and dirt from the converter quickly. Once the mixture you have made has soaked in, use the spray to blast any dirt off if the surface of the converter. It should look as good as new.
