Half round gutters are easy to clean, because they have no corners which trap dirt. All the dirt collects in the middle of the gutter so it can be easily removed during cleaning. Gutters should be cleaned at least once or twice a year. They collect all sorts of things like leaves, dust, bird droppings and twigs. If these are not removed regularly, they can accumulate and cause blockages in the gutter and drain system. Gutters are the most neglected fittings in the home, and most home owners will only think of cleaning them when there is a problem. The first precaution when cleaning gutters is to climb carefully up the ladder to the roof. Some other useful tips are outlined below:
Get all the Equipment:
There is nothing so frustrating as climbing up to the roof, and finding that you do not have all the equipment to clean the gutters. Generally, you will need a ladder, waste bag, gutter scoop (it can be a cut plastic water jug),rubber gloves, garden hose and bucket.
Hang the bucket on the gutter. The bucket should not be too heavy, as it can damage the gutters. Choose a 2 or 3 gallon bucket with a metal handle. To hang the bucket on the gutter, use a hook attached to the handle.
The best time to clean gutters is the fall and spring time. Cleaning during these seasons ensures that rubbish that is left before and after the winter is removed.
