Tips for Sealing Roof Flashing Tips for Sealing Roof Flashing

Roof Flashing needs occasional repairs, that can be easily done using some basic household tools and the following tips.

Sealing Roof Flashing around Drip Edge

Carefully examine the drip edge. This is vital, since the seal along the shingles is often ruptured, making the roof flashing more prone to leaks. Use roofing cement to seal the leaking joints. Apply a small amount of roofing cement along the eaves, when sealing the drip edges. Sealed eaves prevent water run-off leading to the collection of rainwater. Ensure that you spread the cement evenly.

Sealing Roof Flashing under Roof Valleys

If the leak has been intensive, you need to inspect the roof valleys. For this, individually lift-up the shingles located near the flashing of the roof valleys. For sealing in this area, use urethane roofing cement.

Chimney-base Roof Flashing Sealing

Flashing around the chimney is also prone to leaking. If the seams along the flashing are ruptured, clean the debris. Again, use roofing cement to seal the ruptured seams.

Dormer Roof Flashing Sealing

On dormer roofs, you need to clean the old caulking layers along the flashing. Use a chisel for this. Re-caulk the area with weatherproof caulk or roofing cement.

Sealing Roof Flashing around Skylights

Flashing around the skylight is often neglected. It has a metal girdle-like structure, that is called the flange. Gently, lift the shingles around the flange, and seal the flashing with roofing cement.

Sealing Roof Flashing around Roof Vents

Flashing under the roof vents is prone to developing cracks. Sealing is a bit demanding here, due to the difficulty in accessing the flashing seams. Use a caulking gun for applying the roofing cement.
