Hydraulic Cement, also known as “water plug,” is a patching compound that can be used to fight basement moisture which seeps through small cracks in foundation walls or rises through fissures in the basement floor. The process is relatively simple. All one must do is trowel the hydraulic cement over the cracks, packing it tightly into the deepest and widest areas. Here are a few tips and mistakes to avoid that will make this simple process go smoothly.
Clean the Area
Hydraulic cement is spectacularly sticky. It will adhere to any type of concrete, new or old. To create the longest lasting and most waterproof bond, the concrete should be thoroughly scrubbed and cleaned before the hydraulic cement is applied.
Apply Thick Amounts
To maximize the benefits, it is recommended that hydraulic cement be applied at least 1-inch deep and .5-inches wide. Medium sized cracks may need to be widened with a chisel or masonry drill before applying the hydraulic cement. Ensure that no dust or concrete bits remain before beginning if a crack is widened in that manner.
Be Prepared and Work Quickly
Complete the prep work first and have the tools for the job prearranged and ready to go before mixing the hydraulic cement. There will only be about 2 minutes before the cement begins its initial hardening phase. Being ready and working quickly prevent the need to mix a fresh batch of cement due to premature hardening.
