Tips on Making a Crochet Table Runner Tips on Making a Crochet Table Runner

A crochet table runner can be a lovely accent for any occasion. If you decide to make one yourself, here are a few tips to help with the process:

Crochet Thread

Use a small crochet thread or yarn. Using a yarn that is too thick won't give you the elegant look you want.

Washable Thread

Use a washable thread or yarn so spills and dust aren't such a problem. You may want to consider using a fabric protector such as Scotchgard®, especially if the runner will be on display for more than a few days. You can't stop dust from getting on it, but the treatment will make it easier to rinse out.

Be Patient

Crochet is a very forgiving craft; if you make a mistake, you can very easily back up and fix it.  When you're finished crocheting, wash the runner in warm soapy water. You'll want to wash out the hand oils that naturally get into the thread during the crocheting process. The oil can attract dust and dirt. The washing will also help smooth out any bumpiness caused by slight variations in stitch tension. Just lay the piece flat on a towel to dry. If necessary, you can also press it lightly under a damp cloth.
