A pressure washer pump in good condition is always essential when using the device for different cleaning purposes. If you notice that the device is not working properly, troubleshoot it before calling in a professional.
The Pump Engine Does not Start
There are two kinds of pressure washers -- one uses electrical power and the other uses gas power. If the device is electric, check the cables for any sign of damage. Replace the cables if they are damaged. Check the power supply connection if it is alright. Inspect the circuit breaker or the fuse box and ensure that they are working properly.
If the device is gas powered, check the spark plug connection to see if it has come loose. Use a pair of gloves to reconnect the wire connector and the plug. This procedure will most likely solve the issue. If the engine still does not start, determine if the fuel in the tank is old. If the tank is not empty, water could have built up inside the gas lines. Replace the fuel and restart the engine. A clogged fuel line should also be inspected. If the fuel is contaminated, remove it from the tank and replace it. Restart the engine to check.
Pump engine problems are also related to dirty air filters. When the filters are dirty, air flow to the carburetor is reduced, thus reducing pump engine performance. Locate the air filters and double check them. If they are too dirty, remove them from the system. Clean excess debris and dirt around the filter as well as on the seals and surrounding areas around the filtration system. As long as the air filters are clean, performance levels should increase.
The Pump is Too Noisy
Check the temperature of the water coming to the pump. If it is too hot, it will definitely cause noise. If this is not the cause of the issue, check the pump oil level. If the level is too low, add more oil to the system. If the oil level is just fine, inspect the suction line for any signs of air. If there is air inside the suction line, tighten the inlet water fittings.
Inspect the pump valves to ensure that they are clean. Clean any dirt or debris in the valves. If they are damaged, replace them with new ones. Sometimes the pump bearings and the valve springs can also cause noise if they are worn out. Replace these parts if necessary.
Check the inlet line to see if it is damaged or bent. Fix the damage and see if this fixes the problem. If it does not, it might be caused by low water supply. Do not allow the water supply to remain low for long periods of time.
If the pump is exerting too much or too little pressure, check the nozzle to see if it is too small, too big, or simply clogged. Always use a nozzle with the correct size. Inspect the nozzle for any signs of damage as well. Replace it if necessary.
