Troubleshooting a Washing Machine Drain that Overflows

If the washing machine drain in your machine is not working properly, it could result in a flood in your laundry room. Therefore, if you notice overflowing from your machine, tackle the problem as soon as possible. Fortunately, washing machines are relatively simple mechanical devices and you can probably repair the problem yourself. This easy to follow step by step guide will show you how.

Step 1 - Diagnose Problem

Before you can fix the overflow with your washing machine, you will need to diagnose the faulty component that is causing the problem. First, turn on your washing machine and fill it about halfway full of water. Then, unplug the machine. If the machine continues to fill, the problem is probably mechanical and means that the fill valve is stuck or faulty. However, if the machine stops filling with water, then the fill valve is probably fine.

Next, unscrew the panel on the back of the washing machine that allows you to access the wiring and switches. Look for a switch that has a tube attached to it. Disconnect the tube and blow it out to make sure it's not clogged. Inspect the tube to make sure it's not damaged or does not have any holes in it. Replace the hose and try filling the machine again. In some cases, this may actually fix the problem. If it does not, try blowing into the hose while it is connected to the pressure switch. If the switch is working you should hear two clicks. If you don't hear the two clicks, you'll need to replace the switch.

Step 2 - Buy Parts

Once you know which part is causing the problem, visit the retailer where you purchased your washing machine or go online and order that a replacement part. Make sure that you have the exact model number for your washing machine on hand so that you can make sure you order the correct part.

Step 3 - Unplug Washing Machine

Before you begin working on the washing machine, make sure it is unplugged from the wall. Also, make sure that the water shutoff valve in the laundry room is closed as well.

Step 4 - Repair Problem

• Replace Fill Valve - To replace the fill valve, disconnect the hoses that lead to the valve, and then remove the screws. Then, simply pull out the old valve and install the new one. When installing the new water fill valve, make sure the electrical blade connections line up properly and are inserted all the way into the receptacle slots. Finally, replace the screws and reattach the hoses.
  
  
• Replace Water Level Control Hose - If you need to replace the damaged water level controls, simply remove the old one and use a pair of pliers to gently push a new one into place on the pressure switch and the inlet stem on the water fill valve.
  
  
• Replace Pressure Switch - To replace the switch, simply remove the two screws that hold the switch in place, and then remove the butt connectors that are used to attach the wiring. In some cases, the switch may be connected by a wiring harness. Simply screw the new switch in place and reconnect the wiring.
