Security lights can be an excellent way of protecting your home from potential intruders. However, they’re excellent as long as they're working but when they develop problems they’re obviously not so appealing. You need to be able to troubleshoot problems with security lights, especially as some of them can be fixed without calling in an electrician.

Lights Stay On

When you turn on the power to your security lights system, the motion sensors are activated and once they warm up, they can detect heat and movements in the surrounding area creating a "protective grid".

A movement sensor is tripped when too many grid zones are blocked by moving objects consequently changing the infrared energy levels. Therefore, motion sensor security lights are meant to come on only when they detect motion, but sometimes for various reasons, they can remain on all the time. This could be attributed to an electrical failure, lightning, power surges, or even user error.

The best course of action is to see first if something has changed in the immediate environment. For instance, a tree close by that didn't affect the security light last year would have grown since and extended its branches now causing the wind to rustle through the leaves, constantly moving them in front of the sensor and tripping it.

So check for anything that could be constantly moving in the area of detection. If nothing obvious turns up, try turning the lights off at the breaker (or unplugging) for around 20 seconds. Confirm visually that the security lights have gone off and then turn the breaker back on. The light will reappear but should go off after a few minutes.

Flickering Lights

If the light from your security lights is flickering, the course of action depends on whether the problem lies with single or multiple lights. If a single bulb is flickering, you will need to climb up and check that the bulb is securely fitted in the fixture.

If it is secured tightly in place, try replacing the bulb because flickering lights can be a prelude to the bulb burning out completely. In most instances, this will eliminate the problem. If it doesn't, turn the breaker off for that circuit and inspect every electrical box along the line for damaged wires or loose connections and fix it. If your inspection doesn't lead to anything conclusive, however, you may need to have the wiring inspected by a qualified electrician.

Lights Don’t Come On

If the security lights won’t come on at night, the problem could be that another light is turned on in the vicinity, fooling the sensor into believing it’s still daylight. Try covering part of the sensor with black electrical tape or reposition the security lights to a position where the other lights won’t interfere.

Sensitivity

If your motion sensor security lights keep coming on for every passing thing, you need to adjust the sensitivity or slightly change the direction of the sensor or even a combination of both to eliminate the problem. Also, check that the light has a proper view of the area it’s covering.

No Power

If your security lights simply won’t work, it might be because they’re not receiving power. You can check this by simply replacing the light, or maybe you want to make certain before buying some expensive halogen or LED replacement light, test the fixture socket with a multimeter. If all is fine, replace the bulb.

To test further, switch off the circuit breaker for the security lights. Open up the electrical box and check each of the connectors to make sure all the wires to each connector doesn't come loose. If that should happen, remove the connector and verify to make sure it is the right size for the wires.

You can then put all its wires back together and re-secure the connector back on. You can give the individual wires a little "tug" to verify its connection. After checking the connections, if the problem still exists, it could be caused by a faulty breaker or some deeper problem, where a qualified electrician should be called in.

Common Problems with Security Lights FAQ

How do you reset an outdoor sensor light?

One of the easiest methods for resetting outdoor sensor lights, particularly if you don't know where the reset button is, can be found at the breaker box. Flip the breaker that controls your motion sensor lights, wait for one minute, and flip it back on again.

Why is my sensor light not turning off?

Many motion sensor lights come standard with an override assistance. If that function is turned on, it's going to be engaged until the override function turns back off.

Why does my sensor light keep coming on when there is nothing there?

Motion sensor lights can turn on for many reasons that can indicate problems with the lights. These lights may turn on at random as they begin to wear out from age.

Lights may also turn on due to a power surge.

Improper installation and improper settings can also cause this issue, so if you have recently installed your lights or changed your settings, look to this first.

Small animals and even insects can also cause the sensors to turn on if they get close enough to the sensor.

Why does my security light stay on after a power cut?

After the power goes out and then turns back on, it often creates a power surge that can trigger motion lights. This overrides the motion sensor system and can cause the lights to stay turned on until they are reprogrammed or reset.

What activates a security light?

Security lights use infrared to detect motion that will trigger the lights to turn on. However, other things can cause these infrared sensors to trigger.

Heat waves that come from animals and people set off the lights but mechanical objects that emit heat, such as cars, can also create these waves.

Sometimes, wind or movement created by wind can likewise trigger the sensors.
