split heat pump which fails to work can be very annoying, and you may be tempted to get an engineer as soon as the problem surfaces. The split heat pump can become damaged through regular use, and parts of the machine may need to be replaced. Before you begin to write out a large check, however, you should try and perform a few simple troubleshooting routines that can help you to get the best from your device. If you have some home improvement knowledge, or even the split heat pump manual to hand, you should be able to manage a few basic troubleshooting actions which can save you a lot of money.  

Troubleshooting a Split Heat Pump

The causes of a split heat pump not working are many, but your main focus should be on the parts which are outside the house. If you have some problems with these parts, you will not be able to get the pump running. This outside pump is also most at risk from damage, particularly from the natural environment such as weeds and insects. Once you are able to remove those items, then you might be able to find locate further problems, and clear them away at the same time.

Pump Does not Produce Heat

When the pump does not produce heat, it is the most serious problem there is. The main problem might be the motor, which is found at the back or center of the pump. Motors are sometimes fallible, so check that you can also get a replacement which matches your current heat pump. Replacing these motors will probably be one of the easiest jobs you do, as they simply screw in and out. So long as the pump is turned off, and disconnected from the mains, You should be fine.

Low Pressure

Another big problem with split heat pumps is that they tend to loose heat pressure. The head is the part of the device which moves the air from the pump and into the ducts, so if there is not enough pressure, you may find that the heat becomes very low temperature. Your water temperature for your morning shower will not be hot, instead it will be lukewarm. You should check that the refrigerant has not leaked or been allowed to solidify, because it is one of the most common factors that cause the water pressure to weaken. If you have a problem with the pump having excessive pressure, then you should consider cleaning out your condenser, as this is a common source of high temperatures. You may also need to clean out the air ducts because  debris can act as though the pressure has been increased. You should check around the perimeter of the area for signs that the pump has been damaged, or that the thermostat is not working correctly. Replace the thermostat regularly.
