Updating Your Patio Bar Set Updating Your Patio Bar Set
Update your existing patio bar set, and make it seem brand new. You can make simple and easy changes to your furniture, with the right tools and materials. This home project should take about a day to complete. Be sure to work in a well ventilated area. If you are working outdoors, be sure to check the forecast for a day when you will have good weather.
Step 1 – Safety
Paint strippers, stains and sealer products can be quite toxic. Be sure to put on your protective eyewear and work gloves before you use them. Apply harsh chemicals in a well ventilated area. If you are working outdoors, be sure to lay down an old sheet, to protect your lawn or patio.
Step 2 – Washing Your Bar Set
Before you update your set, wash it thoroughly, to see where you may need to make some repairs. Fill a bucket with warm water. Add about 3 squirts of liquid detergent to the water. Combine the solution until the water is soapy. Immerse your sponge into the warm, soapy water. Squeeze out any excess liquid. Wash all of the pieces of your patio bar set. If necessary, use a wire brush to remove any stuck on residue. Rinse the furniture thoroughly with you garden hose. Allow the furniture enough time to dry completely.
Step 3 – Repairing Any Imperfections
Inspect your patio bar set for any cracks or imperfections. If your set is made of wood, use a wood compound to fill and cracks, small holes or dents. Apply the compound with a putty knife. Allow the wood compound enough time to dry completely. Sand down the wood compound to make the surface of the furniture smooth and even.
Step 4 – Choosing a New Finish
Decide whether you want to want to change the finish on your bar set. If you have a wooden set, you can strip any existing paint or stain, and apply a brand new finish. Consider using a more up-to-date color choice in paint, or a fresher stain tone. Visit your local hardware or home improvement store, to research the newest finish options. Metal and plastic bar sets can be spray painted with newer color choices. Be sure to use a spray paint that is designed either for metal or plastic, depending on your bar set. A sealer should be applied to the furniture after you have painted or stained it. The sealer will protect your patio set from the outdoor elements.
Step 5 – Updating Fabrics
If your bar set has cushions, consider changing the fabric. If possible, use cushion covers to update the cushions. Use a tape measure to determine the measurements of your cushions. Take those measurements with you to your home improvement store or garden shop. Look for products that will easily cover your existing cushions. Choose a fabric that is weatherproof, and that will complement your furniture.
