Using a Cement Mixer

If you are doing any cement mixing at your house, you will need to use a cement mixer. Whether you rent or own the cement mixer, there are a few basics that you will need to know.

Using a Cement Mixer

A cement mixer is used to mix together cement, sand, water, and gravel to make concrete. You want to have the cement mixer going as you add each material in the cement mix. Half of the ballast (sand and gravel) is added first and then a bit of water. Then you add all of the cement mix and the rest of the ballast, letting it mix for a couple of minutes. Add a bit more water until the cement mix is smooth and plastic looking.

How long it takes the concrete to set depends on the type that you made. Most will take, on average, five to seven days to partially cure and 28 days to become completely hard. But you can buy a cement mix that is fast drying, taking only 12 to 24 hours to dry.

Cleaning a Cement Mixer

The easiest way to clean a cement mixer is by rinsing it out with a hose after each use. If you find that some of the mixtures has hardened and is sticking, you can turn the mixer on and add a couple of shovels of gravel and some water than will loosen the mix.
