Using a Rubber Mulch Mat on a Playground
A rubber mulch mat is something that is used a lot on playgrounds. They come in several different colors and are used to help keep children safe whenever they are playing. It is a soft material that is safe. Because this type of mat is made completely out of rubber, it will not disintegrate or decompose. It is also basically indestructible.
Step 1 – Shock Absorbency
It is important to know how shock absorbent that this material is. Since it is something that is used for children when they are playing, you will want to be sure that it is something that they cannot get hurt on. Numerous tests are put on this particular type of material. Not only have several states tested it, but the U.S. consumer product safety commission has also run numerous tests on the product to make sure that it is safe. An average of about 500 injuries a day that result in emergency room visits take place on a playground. Most of them are due to falls. The more absorbent the material, the safer the children will be whenever they are playing.
Step 2 – Overall Safety
You will find that this particular type of material has the ability to retain just enough moisture so that there is no dust. This helps children with any allergies. It also does not retain too much moisture so that they can come slippery and end up causing more injuries than preventing. These pieces are too heavy to be blown away so you will not have to worry about them blowing away during any adverse weather conditions.
Step 3 – Prepare
The best way for you to prepare the area for the mulch mat to be laid is to first clear the area completely. You will need to get rid of stumps, debris and rocks. You will then need to measure and calculate the area so that you will know how much equipment is needed. It is also necessary for you to have railroad ties surrounding the area where the mulch mat will be. Make sure that you get rid of the surface that was there beforehand. This means rocks and sand, as they will eventually make their way to the surface and take away from the shock absorbency and safety of the mulch mat. There will be a filter fabric that is laid underneath the rubber so that weed growth will not happen.
Step 4 – Arrival and Maintenance
You can expect the mulch mat to arrive in bulk so that you can lay it all in at once. When it comes to actual maintenance, you will only need to worry about raking it occasionally. This will help to get rid of any debris or harmful items such as rocks or sharp materials. The raking will also keep the mulch mat spread out the way that it should be. The amount of raking that is necessary is dependent on the amount of traffic it receives.
