Using an Air Purifier Around Infants
An air purifier cleans and disinfects the air in your home. It uses filters and collection grids to filter out impurities and allergens from the air, thus preventing you from breathing them in.
Healthier Environments
Infants have very sensitive respiratory systems and using an air purifier to keep the air clean around your child is vital. Respiratory illnesses in older children or adults may be caused by problems in infancy. This could be the time when children develop allergies, asthma, and other related conditions.
Air Purifier Placement
An air purifier in your child’s room will clean and purify the air of allergens such as dust, pollen, mites, and many others. These allergens have an adverse effect on babies because their immune systems are not fully developed and their bodies cannot filter them out in the same way adults can.
Purifying the air will reduce the allergens that your baby is exposed to and can reduce the likelihood of your child contracting asthma or allergies even if the infant is predisposed to such conditions.
Sleep Induction
The levels of growth hormones tend to rise significantly during sleep. If a child’s environment is full of allergens, they may become bothersome and affect the child’s sleep and thus their development.
If your infant already suffers from respiratory problems, installing an air purifier will remove a lot of the irritants for the child’s lungs, making breathing, and therefore sleep, much easier.
Cigarette Smoke is a Nursery Hazard
One of the worst offenders to your baby’s lung health is cigarette smoke. An infant’s respiratory system is not equipped to fight off the negative impact of cigarette smoke. Ideally, consider giving up the habit or, at the very least, installing an air purifier that is designed to filter out this nursery hazard if there is cigarette smoke anywhere in the home.
There are a wide range of models available for you to choose from which are designed specifically for babies because they function silently.
Ionic Air Purifiers
An ionic air purifier releases a stream of negatively charged ions that electrify particles floating in the air. These negatively charged allergens are then attracted to collection plates inside the unit which have a positive charge, and also to anything that is positively charged in the room.
The drawback to this type of unit is that they only have an effect on a small area around them since they don’t have fans to circulate the air. Another problem is that the particles are not effectively removed from the room because most of them end up on walls or tables and can always rise into the air again.
HEPA Air Purifiers
High-efficiency particulate air filters, or HEPA filter air purifiers, employ fans to circulate the air through the unit and use filters and grids that trap airborne particles down to 0.3 microns in size with an efficiency of 99.97%. This means that these air purifiers can remove some of the smallest allergens present in the environment including smoke and dust.
Some HEPA filters also come equipped with medical grade ultra-violet lights that kill harmful bacteria, viruses, and mold spores present in the environment. They also contain carbon dust and Zeolite blends that remove chemicals and odors from your child’s room.
