Ways to Prevent Chili Pepper Diseases Ways to Prevent Chili Pepper Diseases

The chili pepper is a very popular pepper that is grown in throughout the world. It is easy to grow, and is a great companion plant for others, but it is quite susceptible to disease. These diseases are caused from some kind of unnatural occurrence that disrupts the growth of the chili pepper. Here are a few of the ways to prevent some of the diseases.

Root Rot

A major disease that is common with chili pepper is some sort of root rot. Phytophthora root rot, or called chili wilt, is the most common. This is when the chili pepper begins to wilt and then will collapse altogether after just a few days. It is very common in the mid summer and early fall. Prevention of this disease is done by keeping the plants from overcrowding. When the peppers get crowded, and the soil becomes too wet, they will show symptoms of Phytophthora root rot.

Leaf Diseases

Besides root rot, the chili pepper can also have bacterial leaf spots. This is very common when the weather has been excessively wet and humid. Prevention is to plant the chili pepper seeds in places where the soil is well drained. You should also soak the seeds prior to planting in a 20 percent bleach/50 percent water solution.
