A geothermal cooling system may be defined as a process whereby the topmost layer (up to 10 feet) of the ground is used to control and regulate temperature. Geophysical research reveals that the topmost layer of earth retains a temperature between 50 to 61 degrees Fahrenheit. This temperature is exploited with the aid of a geothermal device, to extract heat energy and send the cool temperatures into a pre-determined warm area.

How Does Geothermal System Work?

A circulating type of pump is set up under the ground that extracts the cool stable temperature from the surface of the ground. Loops of copper or polyethylene tubing are interred in the ground in any convenient position—either horizontal or vertical—and connected to this pump.

The tubing has a refrigerant (either water or more preferably an anti-freeze liquid) that is ejected through the pipe, bartering the warm energy in the building with the cooler energy in the ground. This method of direct exchange facilitates sustaining a stable cool temperature.

The components used for geothermal cooling are incredibly durable. The pump has a life span of nearly 25 years and the copper/polyethylene loop buried in the ground can last up to 50 years.

Two Types of Systems

Geothermal cooling used for creating the cooling process is of 2 types: water-to-air systems and water-to-water systems. Water-to-air system is a substitute for central air conditioning. This process uses a liquid coolant to shift the energy into the air which subsequently is blasted throughout a structure.
