An NiMH battery, or Nickel Metal Hydride battery, is one that is primarily constituted of the element nickel and a metal hydride. Nickel is used in the formation of the anode, or the positive side, whereas a metal that absorbs hydrogen is used in the cathode, or the negative side. NiMH batteries are widely used in rechargeable versions of batteries and also in the electric automobile industry.
Advantages of NiMH Batteries
NiMH batteries are widely used in applications that require high battery usage. They are also quite affordable and can be recharged many times. This makes them more cost effective and efficient. These batteries are the most widely used in automobiles, cameras and electronic toys that require frequent recharging. In comparison to single use batteries, NiMH are much more reliable and longer lasting.
Drawbacks of NiMH Batteries
One of the prime drawbacks of NiMH batteries is their quick self discharge rate, especially in the first few days after usage. Though they are not considered hazardous waste, the production of NiMH batteries is somewhat detrimental to the environment. As a result, recycling of these batteries is recommended, so that newer batteries can be manufactured from the same used material without having to resort to additional mining.
