Removing drywall tape can be a messy process, so use sheets or plastic to protect carpets and furniture. Use a utility knife to cut both ends of the tape that needs to be removed. Do not press hard enough to cut the drywall itself. Use a sponge to dampen the tape and allow it to soak for a few minutes. Gently peel away the tape. If it rips, you can wet it again and start over, peeling it again after a few minutes. Use the wet sponge to remove any bits and pieces of tape that remain. Make certain that no loose tape remains before replacing it with new tape.
