Adding garage insulation is an integral weatherproofing step once you've decided to convert it or part of it to a living space. Depending on its current state or, more specifically, the state of its interior walls, the type of insulation you use will vary.
For unfinished garage walls without drywall, batt or roll insulation made of fiberglass is the logical choice. It's relatively inexpensive, easy to install and doesn't make a huge mess. Solid foam board made of polystyrene or some other material is another option for unfinished walls. If drywall is already hung in the garage, rather than tear it down, use loose fill insulation. Comprised of either cellulose or fiberglass, loose fill insulation is blown into place through a small hole with a specialized tool.
