Where to Store a Barbeque Propane Tank in Winter

People who cook with a propane barbecues often forget the propane tank during the winter months. However, cold temperatures can affect the gas inside a tank and can have an impact when trying to use the propane barbecue again in the summer. In order to keep the propane tank safe during the winter months, there are a few methods that can be used to store the entire propane barbecue, or the gas cylinder, away from the cold.

Store the Tank In a Building

It is not advisable to store the propane barbecue tank in the house or connected areas like the garage, and in a number of states, it is illegal to do so. However, it is advisable to keep the cylinder warm, so turning the gas bottle valve off and detaching the connector hose from the grill can make the tank suitable for storing in a shed or outhouse.

Store the Tank Outside

Propane barbecue tanks often come with a dust cover which can be used to cover the propane valve. Once it is covered, stand the gas bottle upright in order to prevent moisture from building up. Place the bottle on a shelf, not on the ground, and cover with tarpaulin. Propane barbecue cylinders can withstand temperatures as cold as -50 degrees Fahrenheit.
