Revamped my Gas Fireplace

That ugly plywood surround drove me crazy from day one. But I'm a single mom on a VERY limited budget and just as limited experience. But I figured what the hey, it's MY house, if I mess it up no one will yell at me but me. So I gave it a try and I have to say, I'm pretty proud of the results! Now, if anyone can help me put in a wall switch to turn the fireplace on, I would appreciate it! It's a remote control and it pooped out (yes, I changed the batteries in both the remote and the remote box). It turns on manually at the box but what a pain, I just want to add a wall switch and toss the remote out the window! YouTube makes it look easy but I'd like to hear from someone who has done it...Thanks!

Step 1

Did this backwards...this is the after...retiled hearth, surround, new mantel with a fresh coat of off white paint.

Step 2

This is the cheap, ugly mantel/surround that came with the house. I was SO glad to find reasonable tile and the courage to DIY (total amateur).
